Structure and Implementation of New Practical English Textbooks Driven by Artificial Intelligence
Original reporting by arXiv (cs.AI)

AI-driven English textbooks are adaptive learning systems that transform static language materials into personalized, interactive experiences. Traditionally, language learning has relied on fixed paper sequences, but advancements in artificial intelligence are enabling dynamic systems that can diagnose learner needs, recommend tailored tasks, and provide immediate, formative feedback. This paper introduces a novel AI-driven textbook framework for practical English, built on a five-layer architecture encompassing knowledge mapping, learner profiling, task generation, feedback orchestration, and teacher-side governance.
To validate its efficacy, a prototype of this system was rigorously tested over eight weeks with 186 non-English-major undergraduates. The results demonstrated significant improvements compared to conventional static digital textbooks. The AI system boosted unit completion accuracy from 72.4% to an impressive 84.9% and raised the average score for speaking tasks by 10.8 points. Furthermore, it dramatically reduced the teacher's correction time by 31.6%. These findings underscore the potential of AI-driven textbooks to offer both curriculum stability and highly personalized learning paths, rich practice opportunities, and valuable traceable data for educators.
The study unequivocally demonstrates the transformative potential of AI-driven textbooks in language education. By providing personalized learning paths, dynamic content, and real-time formative feedback through its proposed five-layer architecture, the system significantly enhances student outcomes, as evidenced by improved unit completion accuracy and speaking task scores. Crucially, it also alleviates teacher workload by reducing correction time, thereby freeing educators to focus on higher-level instructional tasks rather than repetitive grading. This dual benefit marks a significant leap forward from traditional static learning materials, validating the efficacy of intelligent adaptive systems in practical application.
A New Educational Paradigm
The implications of this research extend far beyond the English language classroom. This prototype represents a tangible step towards a future where adaptive AI systems are not merely supplementary tools but fundamental components of the educational experience across disciplines. Such systems promise to democratize access to tailored, high-quality learning, providing every student with an individualized tutor and curriculum, irrespective of geographical or socio-economic barriers. For educators, it signals a shift from content delivery to facilitation, curriculum design, and critical intervention, empowered by granular, data-driven insights into student progress. As AI continues to mature, we can anticipate these intelligent textbooks incorporating even more sophisticated diagnostic capabilities and predictive analytics, fundamentally reshaping how knowledge is acquired, assessed, and disseminated globally.
Frequently asked questions
- What makes an AI-driven English textbook different from a regular digital textbook?
- An AI-driven English textbook functions as an adaptive learning system, moving beyond fixed paper or static digital sequences. It can diagnose individual learners, recommend personalized tasks, and provide real-time formative feedback. This contrasts with traditional textbooks that offer a uniform curriculum, allowing for dynamic adjustment to student needs and learning pace, and maintaining curriculum stability while offering rich practice materials.
- How do AI-powered learning systems improve English language acquisition for students?
- AI-powered systems significantly enhance English language acquisition by offering personalized learning paths and rich practice materials. They can adapt to individual learner progress, providing targeted recommendations and feedback. Studies show such systems can boost unit completion accuracy and improve speaking task scores, while also reducing the time teachers spend on corrections and providing traceable classroom data.
- How does an AI-powered English textbook adapt to individual student learning needs?
- An AI-driven English textbook employs a multi-layered architecture to personalize learning. This includes knowledge mapping to structure content, learner profiling to understand student progress and needs, and intelligent task generation. It also integrates feedback orchestration for real-time guidance and teacher-side governance, ensuring a stable curriculum while individualizing the educational journey with tailored tasks and recommendations.
